Memorial Day Picnic Wednesday, May 28, 2008

What do you get when you mix the Voice Of God employees, the Branham Tabernacle congregation, nine gallons of snow-cone juice, hundreds of pounds of meat, volleyball, jumping castles, and beautiful weather? You get a wonderful day of fellowship and good times!

This past Monday (Memorial Day), more than 600 people gathered together on the Voice Of God property to spend some time getting to know each other a little better while eating, playing games, and enjoying fellowship.

There was something to do for everyone; the little ones had their own jumping castle and trailer rides from Brother Joseph. The pre-teens had frisbee, miniature golf, carnival style games and corn-hole (which was quickly taken over by the adults). There was a volleyball tournament for the youth group, ages 16-25, set to begin at one-o-clock sharp. Other than the kids' corn-hole games, the adults enjoyed some games of horseshoes, singing and fellowship, relaxing lawn chairs, and watching their children and grandchildren interact and have fun.

At one-o-clock on the dot, the first whistle blew, and the first four of eight teams started out the double elimination volleyball tournament. Our official referees were at their post. For the next four and a half hours, the volleyball courts were a main attraction as the weaker teams fell away and the winning teams battled it out for the final prize. The championship game found two tired but eager teams surrounded by a cheering crowd on all sides. It was drawn out and intense, but there was finally a winner. Everyone cheered and gathered around as the runners up and winning team received their prizes. It was a great time for all, but the most rewarding thing was the team bonding and the prayers that each team made before every game was played.

As usual, the jumpy-jumps and snow cones were a huge hit for the younger kids. The record snow cone eater ate around 40 snow cones (with only a couple reports of brain freeze!) Needless to say, she was only nine and the parents were unaware of the ongoing competition…

Everyone enjoyed the delicious pot-luck food and the wonderful fellowship. Many forecasters were calling for severe weather in the area, but the Lord provided a beautiful day, perfect for a picnic!
