Doomsday Clock Wednesday, August 01, 2007

In mid January, 2007, the “Doomsday Clock,” science’s symbol of the earth’s path toward destruction, shifted two more minutes towards “midnight,” resting now at just five minutes away.

The Doomsday Clock was founded by former ‘Manhattan Project’ physicists, the men who created the atom bomb, to assess the danger of a nuclear holocaust. As the hand moves toward midnight, nuclear destruction becomes more imminent. Since its advent in 1947, the Doomsday clock has moved as close as 2 minutes, and as far away as 17 minutes. The closest this clock has been to midnight was in 1953, when the U.S. and Soviet Union began testing hydrogen bombs. Scientists used the instability in the Middle East, spread of atomic weapons, and the threat of problems related to global climate change to justify the move.

As Christians, how close are we? Where do we find comfort in the midst of the world’s fear?
